Valentin is head of the department of Energy Systems Analysis at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and professor of Energy Systems Analysis at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. He is an energy economist and also an expert in decision analysis and model-based energy systems analysis for energy systems integration, including sector coupling and demand side integration. Moreover, he has focused on the integration of grid constraints in power systems models, targeted at power generation and transmission expansion planning.
Before joining the DLR he served as manager of the Energy Policy Research Centre (EPRC) and research area coordinator for Energy and Environment in The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI). In this capacity, he was also a member of the Executive Committee of ESIPP and held an Adjunct Professorship position in Trinity College Dublin until 2018. Further posts before joining the DLR include head of the research unit 'Distributed Energy Systems and Networks' at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), senior researcher within the Karlsruhe Service Research Institute (KSRI) as well as senior analyst for energy economics and project manager within EnBW Trading in Karlsruhe, Germany.
He performs a review function for numerous peer review journals. Valentin Bertsch has also secured research funding in the area of energy economics of approximately €4 million for his own team within the last 5 years. His current research team at DLR comprises 30 research staff and PhD students.
