The ESIPP Symposium "Rethinking our Energy Future: Collaboration and Integration" took place on Thursday 30th November 2017. The event featured a keynote speech from Mark McGranaghan of EPRI, along with presentations and posters from the ESIPP team, and finished off with a panel discussion "Targets for 2030 and the role of ESI" which was moderated by Lisa Ryan. The Energy Systems Integration Partnership Programme research symposium will take place on Thursday 30th November in UCD.
The focus of this research symposium is to bring the research of the Energy Systems Integration Partnership Programme (ESIPP) to a wider audience. ESIPP brings together a multidisciplinary research team in all the main engineering disciplines (electrical, mechanical, civil and chemical) with economics, business, mathematics, environmental, psychology, and earth science disciplines to address the challenges associated with moving towards a more sustainable energy system. This programme brings together 5 different research institutes (UCD, TCD, NUIG, ESRI and DCU), along with Industry partners and collaborators, to build the capability needed to deliver an integrated energy system in Ireland. The collaboration is underpinned by a supportive policy system with active participation by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE), the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER).
Energy Systems Integration enables the effective analysis, design, and control of the interactions and interdependencies of the energy system, as well as between the energy system and other systems such as water and data, taking account of technical, economic, regulatory, and social dimensions. By focusing on the optimization of energy systems we can better understand and use potential co-benefits that increase reliability and performance, and minimise cost and environmental impacts. Energy Systems Integration research is focussed on the interfaces between these systems where there are new challenges and opportunities requiring research, demonstration and deployment to reap the commercial and societal benefits.

This workshop presents recent research carried out by UCD Energy Institute and the ESRI in relevant policy areas relating to future electric power systems, sustainable energy communities, new energy technologies, residential energy efficiency, and energy markets. It should prove useful to those involved in the energy sector from government, industry and academia dealing with the challenges of the future energy system.
